Before You Begin
Baby Beginnings: First Notes (Newborn–9 Months)
Enrollment in Baby Beginnings: First Notes is complimentary.
Please select your preferred Primary and Secondary Musical Beginnings classes. During this introductory program, families may attend any Musical Beginnings class throughout the week without advance notice, regardless of the classes selected on this form.
When your Student transitions into the regular Musical Beginnings program, Annual Tuition will begin at the appropriate prorated amount.
The 2026–2027 Academic Year includes 30 scheduled weeks of instruction. As with most schools and educational programs, there are several planned breaks throughout the year to coincide with holidays and the seasonal calendar. Tuition, however, is based on just 27 weeks of instruction, providing every family with three complimentary weeks built into the Academic Year.
Choosing the Correct Class Level
Please register your Student for the class level they will attend for most of the 2026–2027 Academic Year.
If your Student has a birthday during the year and you are unsure which class is the best fit, don't worry—we're happy to help. Simply contact the BMEC office before registering.
Children develop at different rates, so class placement is based on developmental readiness, musical growth, and the Director's recommendation—not birthdays alone.
One of the strengths of BMEC is that children learn in developmentally appropriate mixed-age classes. Younger children learn by observing older classmates, while older children gain confidence as leaders and role models.
Around December and January, we naturally begin looking at each Student's growth and talking with families whose children may be ready for the next class level. This is something BMEC has always done. If a move would better support your Student's learning, we'll discuss the options together.
The goal is simply to place every Student where they will experience the greatest success throughout the year.
Students Approaching Age Six
Keyboard Encounters is designed primarily for Students who are 4 or 5 years old at the beginning of the Academic Year.
Students who begin the year as 5-year-olds are encouraged to complete the entire Academic Year with their classmates, even if they celebrate their sixth birthday during the year. Advancement to independent piano instruction is typically planned following completion of the Academic Year.
Students who are already 6 years old before the Academic Year begins will generally be recommended for independent piano instruction or another age-appropriate program unless the Director determines a different placement would better meet the Student's educational needs.
As with all BMEC classes, final placement is based upon developmental readiness, musical growth, and the Director's recommendation—not age alone.
