Dr. Roulston will present from Belfast on Zoom:
Researching 19th-Century Ancestors in Ulster Records
The nineteenth century marks a turning point for researching Irish family history: the volume of surviving records is dramatically larger despite a catastrophic destruction of the Public Record Office of Ireland in 1922. There is better survival of private records, including church registers, landed estate papers, and personal correspondence. The expanding responsibilities of state institutions also lead to documentation: caring for the destitute, providing education, and registering births/deaths/marriages on a systematic basis. William will provide a practical overview of the records available to research across Ireland in this period.
