  • Addiction: From Reward Pathways to Relapse

Addiction changes the brain—and understanding those changes can transform the way we respond to substance use, recovery, and relapse.

This training takes a practical look at the neurobiology of addiction, connecting what happens in the brain’s reward system to the behaviors professionals see every day. Participants will explore how changes in dopamine, motivation, decision-making, impulse control, and emotional regulation contribute to craving, tolerance, compulsive use, and vulnerability to relapse.

The training will also examine why relapse happens, including the impact of stress, trauma cues, emotional dysregulation, social pressures, environmental triggers, and impaired executive functioning.

Most importantly, participants will connect the science to practice—exploring evidence-informed strategies for craving management, coping skills, emotional regulation, recovery maintenance, and client engagement.

    Participants will learn how to:

    • Connect changes in the brain’s reward system to addictive behaviors, cravings, tolerance, and relapse.
    • Better understand the clinical differences between intoxication, dependence, substance use disorder, and relapse risk.
    • Recognize common internal and external relapse triggers and risk factors.
    • Apply practical, evidence-informed relapse prevention and recovery-support strategies.
    • Talk about relapse as a clinical learning opportunity rather than a moral failure.
    • Strengthen trauma-informed, ethical approaches to counseling, supervision, and staff development.
    • Support recovery-oriented policies and practices that respond to relapse in effective, non-punitive ways.

From brain science to real-world practice, this training will help professionals better understand not only what happens in addiction—but why it happens and how that knowledge can support lasting recovery.
