Bountiful Davis Art Center (BDAC) invites artists, artisans, and designers to submit individual works or a small body of work for consideration in the curated group exhibition Textile as a Cultural Tool. Creatives working across disciplines, media, and career stages are encouraged to apply.
About the Exhibition
Textile as a Cultural Tool explores textile as both material and method—an enduring cultural tool through which people construct identity, preserve memory, share knowledge, and create collective experiences. Rooted in tradition yet continually evolving, textile practices carry histories of labor, care, resistance, adaptation, and belonging across generations and geographies.
We invite artists, artisans, and designers to submit work that engages with textile in functional, conceptual, or speculative ways. From inherited techniques and ancestral practices to experimental processes and contemporary technologies, the exhibition considers how textiles function as systems of knowledge, communication, and creative expression.
Submissions may include, but are not limited to, weaving and loom-based practices, embroidery and stitch, quilting and patchwork, dyeing and surface design, fiber and soft sculpture, felting, knitting, crochet, knotting, appliqué, textile collage, garment and fashion-based work, installation, digital processes, and experimental textile practices. Cross-disciplinary and collaborative projects are especially encouraged.
Artists are invited to consider the relationships that textiles create and mediate—between body and garment, maker and material, individual and community, and past and present. Works may explore themes such as gender and labor, cultural and ancestral knowledge, family traditions, migration and displacement, storytelling, identity, fashion, sustainability, or the role of textiles in everyday life.
Through these varied approaches, Textile as a Cultural Tool seeks to foreground textile as a powerful visual and material language through which histories and identities can be constructed, carried, preserved, challenged, and reimagined.
