Bountiful Davis Art Center (BDAC) invites artists to submit individual works or a small body of work for consideration in the curated group exhibition Food, Nourishment, and Cultural Memory. Artists working across all media and career stages are encouraged to apply.
About the Exhibition
Food, Nourishment, and Cultural Memory invites artists to explore the many dimensions of food—its role as sustenance, symbol, ritual, and connector across cultures, generations, and communities.
From traditional recipes and ancestral knowledge to everyday meals and shared gatherings, food carries stories of identity, survival, care, migration, and transformation. This exhibition considers how food can preserve cultural memory while also revealing the ways traditions evolve across places and generations.
We welcome work examining the cultural and social significance of food, whether rooted in ritual, domestic life, family histories, labor, agriculture, or communal experience. Artists are encouraged to consider how food shapes relationships that are personal, political, spiritual, or ecological, and how it can reflect broader systems—from local traditions and food production to migration and globalized consumption.
The exhibition embraces a wide range of artistic approaches. From the historical lineage of bodegón painting to contemporary conceptual, performance-based, abstract, and interdisciplinary practices, submissions may engage with food through painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, performance, fiber, digital media, mixed media, and beyond.
Artists might respond to the physical qualities of food—its textures, colors, forms, processes, and transformations—or explore deeper themes such as nourishment and labor, abundance and scarcity, celebration and grief, memory and migration, cultural preservation, environmental relationships, or resistance within industrial food systems.
Whether grounded in personal experience, cultural tradition, observation, research, or imagination, we welcome a broad range of interpretations that invite audiences to consider how food connects us to one another, to our histories, and to the places we inhabit.
