The Growing Mental Health Needs of School-Aged Children in a Post-Covid World
Learning Outcomes:
Attendees will be able to:
1. List 3 mental illness diagnoses of school-aged children
2. Identify reasons/events for childhood mental illness and how it impacts occupational engagement.
3. Recognize the role of OT in addressing these mental health issues in the school setting.
Covid-19 has been identified as having been a traumatic event. We all experienced it. Day to day life came to a screeching halt and overnight, our ability to engage in routine daily occupations ceased. This happened to our children, too. The very structure of their days and the occupation of being a student was taken away without any consideration of how it would impact them. Students of all ages were impacted in ways we are still learning. This presentation will educate you on what the research is telling us and how we as OTs can help.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Moni Keen is the program director of the Doctoral Occupational Therapy Program at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina.
