Muscadines are the South’s native grape and an excellent perennial fruit crop for Georgia gardens and landscapes.
In this one hour workshop, we’ll walk through the essentials of growing and using muscadines; from choosing varieties and building a simple trellis to annual pruning, harvesting, and turning the fruit into wine, juice, jelly, and other treats.
We’ll cover:
-Choosing the right muscadine varieties for fresh eating, wine, and other uses
-Self-fertile vs. female varieties and how many vines you actually need
-Where to plant muscadines and how much space they require
-Simple trellis and arbor options
-Training young vines
-How and when to prune established vines
-Harvesting ripe muscadines
-Ideas for processing and preserving your harvest, including wine, juice, jelly, and preserves
Whether you’re considering planting your first muscadine or have an existing vine that has gotten out of control, this workshop will give you the fundamentals you need to successfully grow and use this uniquely Southern fruit.
