Demo by John Dimick
John grew up in Brattleboro and studied at the University of Vermont with a History major and Art minor. He then returned for his teaching certificate for Special Education and Industrial Arts. In addition to teaching, John coached cross-country and track & field for 42 years and 68 seasons! Long distance running was an important part of his life, and he qualified for three U.S. Olympic trials as a marathoner. John took up watercolor painting in the mid 1980’s studying under the direction of Maise Crowther. He has been free sketching and technical drawing all his life.
John has entered and received awards at many juried watercolor shows. His painting “The Quilt” was recently awarded the 1st Place Gold Medal at the New England Watercolor Society Signature Members Show held in Boston in February as well as the Lisa Beach Forster Memorial Award at VWS's Fall Awards Show. He is a signature member of the Vermont Watercolor Society and the New England Watercolor Society.
More of John's work can be seen on his website, on Instagram at John.Dimick.9, at Vermont Artisan Designs in Brattleboro and at the Kennedy Gallery in Portsmouth, NH.
Demonstration Description
I plan to have at least two paintings in progress so that I can demonstrate a couple of the different ways that I approach my work.
One painting will be an urban landscape where I’ll demonstrate work from start to finish: reference photo, using grid and drafting tools to draw the image onto the watercolor paper, value study, Grisaille (value underpainting in Payne’s Grey), splash and splatter technique, and finally painting in the colors.
The second painting I’ll have in progress will be a very detailed painting of a pottery workspace which is a continuation of a series of paintings on different interesting workspaces that I’ve painted over the past few years that have been well received in several exhibitions.
I'll bring several prints and paintings as examples of both styles and be open to questions and answers about them. I’ll also try to bring along prints of some award-winning paintings with the judge's comments about what he or she found interesting about the particular piece.
