Submission criteria and definitions:
• Music In Visual Media eligibility release period is January 1 through December 31 of the current calendar year.
• To be considered for nomination, HMMA must be able to review the project, including the music-to-picture, even if only in part. Many unreleased projects are reviewed at film festivals and/or private screenings. In sensitive cases, HMMA may be provided encrypted streaming links from an internal server and will accept a non-disclosure agreement if required.
• The visual media link submitted should not exceed 15 minutes in length whenever possible. Edited clips that best represent the music supporting the visuals are preferred, whether as a single continuous clip (up to 15 minutes) or a reel of multiple music-driven scenes.
• Student films may be submitted at a 50% discount once eligibility is confirmed. To request a student coupon code, email a valid student ID and matching personal ID (driver’s license or other government ID) to student@hmmawards.com.
• If HMMA is unable to review the production or any portion of it that features the music, the project will not be considered for nomination.
• Short Films are defined as motion pictures with a running time of 40 minutes or less, including credits.
• HMMA reserves the right to add, change, or repurpose categories as deemed appropriate.
• HMMA may reassign submissions to a different category if deemed more appropriate. Examples: “Original Score – Short Film” to “Original Score – Animated Short,” or “Original Score – Independent Film” to “Original Score – Independent Film (Foreign Language).”
• All submissions will be researched to confirm validity, including but not limited to verification through online resources such as IMDb.com.
• For MUSIC DOCUMENTARY and MUSIC THEMED FILM, BIOPIC OR MUSICAL categories, enter the director in the “Artist / Composer Name” field and the producer(s) in the “NOTES” section, and include composer credit if applicable.
• Some early visual submissions may be held under consideration without public posting until closer to the Main Event. Final nominations will be posted on the HMMA website and announced via press releases and social media.
• Ensure all form data is accurate. This information will be used to contact you regarding nominations, requests for additional information, and/or awards.
• “Visual Product Title” is required for the visual media project associated with your music submission.
• SONG submissions must include “Written by…” and “Performed by…” in the NOTES section, exactly as they appear in AllMusic and related copyright/publishing registrations.
• Not all categories will necessarily have multiple nominees. Some winners may be pre-selected for specific categories, and some categories may be presented as pre-produced video content during the Main Event and on HMMA social media platforms.
• All links and media submitted to HMMA are kept confidential, secured, and are never shared with third parties.
• By submitting audio and/or visual material, you acknowledge that a short edited portion of the submission, whether from released or unreleased material, may be used in the Main Event production and related HMMA promotional materials, unless you explicitly notify HMMA in writing that specific material may not be displayed publicly.
• All submission fees are non-refundable. HMMA does not provide personalized feedback or critiques of submissions.
