The High Holy Day liturgy asks us to confront powerful—and sometimes difficult—ideas about God, judgment, life, and death. But what happens when we don’t believe what the prayers seem to say?

In this class, we’ll explore some of the season’s most challenging themes and ask how liberal Jews can engage honestly with a tradition that may challenge our deepest beliefs. Do we have to believe every word in the prayer book?
