Understanding CIA Pathways

The Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) provides several routes to the ACIA and FCIA designations, depending on your degree, background, or existing actuarial credentials.

• Pathway 1 (Accredited University): ACIA achieved with an actuarial degree from a CIA-accredited university + 2 ACIA modules + ACIA Capstone Exam + Professionalism Workshop. FCIA achieved with ACIA + 3 CIA Fellow level exams + 2 modules + APLC + experience (3 years total, 1 year Canadian as ACIA).
• Pathway 2 (other Actuarial organizations): ACIA achieved with qualifications from other recognized actuarial organizations + 1 or 2 ACIA modules + Professionalism Workshop. ACIA Capstone only required if other organization is not recognized by the CIA. FCIA achieved with 3 CIA Fellow level exams + 2 modules + APLC + experience (3 years total, 1 year Canadian as ACIA).
• Pathway 3 (recognized Fellow designation): FCIA achieved using a recognized fellow-level designation (FCAS/FSA/FIA/FASSA/FSAI/DAV). FCIA obtained with 1 FCIA Module + APLC + 3 years Canadian experience after first Fellow designation. Canadian experience can be reduced to 1 year with 1 FCIA exam.

ASNA has organized multiple motorcoaches to depart from cities in Ontario and Québec, going directly to the Le Centre Sheraton Montreal Hotel in Montréal! Departure/Return locations will be on-campus at a nearby university in each city.

Tickets for the buses are round-trip. The prices below represent the total cost for the departure and return transfers.

Please note that we are also looking into buses coming from Hamilton, Ottawa, and Québec City. If you would be interested in any of these buses, please select the respective option below. 

Should there be insufficient interest for the buses, we will notify you ahead of time to ensure you have adequate time to arrange your own transportation or use discounted fares from our transportation partners (VIA Rail & Porter Airlines). The discount codes will be included in your confirmation email once you have successfully registered for the convention.

ASNA has organized accommodations for our participants in Montréal! Participants will be residing at Le Centre Sheraton Montreal Hotel for the duration of the conference. Rooms are divided into categories based on number of occupants: Single (1 person), Duo (2 people), Trio (3 people), and Quad (4 people).

The 2-night options are for stays starting on Friday night (January 15th), and the 3-night options are for stays starting on Thursday night (January 14th).

Please note that students taking the Toronto, Waterloo, or London buses are recommended to register for 3-night accommodation, as those buses will be arriving on the evening of Thursday, January 14th.

Volunteering will allow you to meet other fellow like-minded leaders across the nation, receive a distinguishable name tag, and enhance your resume with a position valued by our sponsors! The application period will close at 11:59PM EST on November 30th, 2026.
