  • Preparation for the ROA Monthlong

  • We have found that it is helpful for folks to come into the monthlong with some fluency and literacy around whiteness and our collective capacity to organize together for healing and liberation. Specifically, we invite participants who hold and/or have the following prerequisites:

    • a commitment to Black-wellness, Indigenous sovereignty, and the flourishing of People of the Global Majority
    • at least a year’s study study in intersectional oppression, systems of domination, and liberatory practices
    • an experience with engaging, conversing, and organizing other white folx
    • an experience and/or openness to somatic, embodiment and body-based healing modalities
  • Based on these prerequisites:*
  • Short Answer Questions

  • We would love to get to know you and about your background!

    If you indicated that you do not have the necessary preparation, please indicate why and explain how you feel you are ready.

  • Participant Interests, Needs, and Requests

  • Are you participating in Re-Calling Our Ancestors with a colleague, friend, or accountability partner?*
  • Tuition

  • We believe that how we are with money, together and individually, is part of our pathway out of systems of dominance and toward emergent, co-liberatory futures.

    In commitment to right livelihood for guides, in commitment to compensation for accountability partners, and in commitment to acts of redistribution and reparations, we ask for you to make financial contributions on a sliding scale of $150-$700.

    We ask you to invest at the highest possible level when registering for the course. This helps to eliminate barriers to access for all, covers the real costs of the course, and supports our redistribution and reparations practice. We are committed to working with needs that would enable access for all those involved. As you consider your financial contribution, we invite you to to consider the following questions:

    • What ways have you been granted unearned advantage by the systems we live within?
    • What ways do you have access to income, wealth, and assets?
    • What ways did you and/or your family come to accrue wealth?
    • What ways might your offering be a prayer and enactment of your commitment to restoring balance and right relationship?
    • What ways might financial reciprocity be joyful, healing, and good?
  • What will you be contributing as tuition?*

  • Appropriate Use Agreement

  • Dear Re-Calling Our Ancestors participant,

    Thank you for taking these next steps toward your own wholeness, and towards healing, justice, and liberation in your community. We are looking forward to working with you.

    To support our work together, we are sharing a document called the Appropriate Usage Agreement. This document, adapted from Fierce Allies, seeks to establish clarity around how and in what circumstances you’re welcome to use the tools offered in our work together moving forward, and where you are not welcome to.

    When I was first introduced to this tool, I was immediately put off. As someone deeply aware of problematic aspects of “private property” and “intellectual property,” and whose life mission includes working to dismantle these systems, I was hesitant to engage in anything that smacked of “ownership.”

    Since then, I have come to deeply respect the gifts this tool provides, for me and for my relationships. Some of these gifts include:

    • Confidence that I am honoring my agreements with my teachers, and their expectations of me, even when this feels awkward;
    • Unlearning patterns of cultural appropriation ubiquitous in the communities from which I come;
    • Practicing active relational alignment with the lineages of the tools I incorporate into my work, and those with whom I share these tools;
    • Practicing clear communication and boundaries.

    We hope that as you engage with this tool, similar gifts come forward for you, and we look forward to hearing about it and being in active discussion with you.

    In honor of my Quaker ancestors who would not sign legal documents or swear oaths because that implied that there were times when one doesn’t honor their word, and Quakers are expected to always speak the truth, we do not ask for you to sign this document. We do, however, ask for an acknowledgement that you have read and reviewed it, and agree to its terms.

    By weaving in this ancestral practice I am deviating from the practice of J. Miakoda Taylor, the person who shared this Appropriate Usage tool with me along with a number of other practices I incorporate into my work and may share with you. I have asked Miakoda, a person of Black and Indigenous ancestry, to trust in my trust in you, despite their understandable, expressed absence of trust in white bodied people specifically, and people steeped in capitalist culture in general. In turn, We ask for you to take to heart the trust in your integrity we’re extending, and the opportunities  and/or risk resulting from your choices on myself, Miakoda, and our relationship.

    In partnership,
    Darcy Ottey for the Re-Calling Our Ancestors team

    APPROPRIATE USAGE AGREEMENT

    Lineage: This appropriate usage agreement is adapted from Fierce’ Allies Appropriate Usage Agreement, and is used with permission.

    Upon confirmation of the terms of this agreement, Re-Calling our Ancestors will share materials to support the integration of some foundational practices into your life.

    These practices are powerful. When introduced by an experienced, well-trained coach, guide, or facilitator, they have the potential to foster great safety, trust and resilience. When introduced by a practitioner without proper training and adequate experience using them in a wide variety of circumstances, there is great potential for harm to be caused, to people, communities and/or the project of Re-Calling our Ancestors.

    To prevent harm; foster safety, trust, and resilience; and practice active relational alignment with the lineages of the tools we are incorporating into our work, we ask you to agree to the following:

    I will only use these practices to support the integration of these practices into my life. Before I begin sharing them with others, I will:

    1. Acknowledge the lineage(s) from which the curriculum is sourced, AND
    2. Inform the Re-Calling our Ancestors team of my interest in sharing these tools and receive their guidance on how to most responsibly present it.
    3. If I have an interest in using these tools in any way outside the strictest interpretation of this agreement, I will contact admin@recallingourancestors.org and request permission.
