Certificate Program Description:
Program Overview
This virtual certificate program provides resources, information, and practice opportunities to build competence in Motivational Interviewing (MI). Through experiential learning activities, feedback, and coaching, participants will strengthen both their understanding of MI concepts and their ability to apply MI skills in practice.
Format and Schedule
The program is designed with working professionals in mind. It combines asynchronous coursework with daytime and evening online classes, using a variety of teaching methods to support engagement, flexibility, and skill development. The schedule for classes is published (see dates and times noted in application) so you can plan for participation.
Assessment and Skill Development
Participants will complete MI-focused simulated client interactions using a virtual avatar client. These interactions will be completed both before the first virtual class, and again after completing the program. These assessments provide a measure of growth in MI knowledge and foundational skills.
Topics and Audience
The curriculum covers topics ranging from core MI concepts to working with the “mandated client.” It is appropriate for social workers and other health science or human service professionals with varying levels of prior MI knowledge and experience.
Sessions on ethics, supervision, and leadership also make the program relevant for social workers in direct practice, administration, or management roles and makes it an effective option for obtaining CEs necessary for licensure renewal.
Participation and Trainer
To maximize individualized feedback and coaching, enrollment is limited to 40 participants. Only enrolled participants may attend program sessions.
Lead Trainer: Mary Hodorowicz, PhD, MSW, LCSW-C, Member of MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers)
