  • The San Juan Island Yacht Club proudly announces the 56th Annual Shaw Island Classic Yacht Race to be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, and invites all eligible boats and crews to participate.

RACE DESCRIPTION: The course starts in Friday Harbor, rounds Shaw Island in either direction and returns to Friday Harbor for the finish. The race is scheduled to start at noon on August 8, 2026.
A hearty lasagna dinner and awards ceremony will follow at the San Juan Island Yacht Club.

ELIGIBILITY: The race is open to registered PHRF boats, multihulls, unballasted centerboards, and cruising sailboats of all sizes and rigs. Classes will be provided for multihulls, centerboards, PHRF and cruising classes. Flying sails (as defined by PHRFNW) are permitted in all classes except the cruising class. Entrants for the PHRF class should have a valid PHRFNW certificate, and all entries should submit a rating certificate if they have one. Entries without a certificate will be assigned a rating by the committee.

RULES: The race is governed by the Racing Rules for Sailing (RRS 2025-2028) as published by U.S. Sailing, except as they are changed by the sailing instructions or as follows:

    • Racing rule 75 is modified, yacht club membership is not required.
    • Rule 49.1 is waived for boats originally designed for and rated for the use of trapezes or similar and sailed in the rated configuration. A current rating certificate or a declaration is required.
    • Entrants are reminded that floatplanes and ferries are restricted in their ability to maneuver and should be given rightofway under the Collision Reg's.
    • All entries must meet the appropriate U.S. or Canadian Coast Guard safety requirements and comply with U.S. Coast Guard regulations.

REGISTRATION: Entries must be submitted online on the Club’s website at www.sjiyc.com. Rating certificates may be submitted online or emailed to RC@sjiyc.com. Entries including any rating certificates must be completed no later than midnight Monday Aug 3, 2026.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: The entry list, start times, and Sailing Instructions will be posted on the Club’s website at www.sjiyc.com no later than the end of business on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

SCORING & AWARDS: Trophies will be awarded for the first three finishers in each class based on corrected time, adjusted for timeontime based on PHRF or committeeassigned ratings. The awards presentation will be during the lasagna dinner served by First Mates at the clubhouse following the race, at approximately 7pm.

  • I understand that any ratings assigned by the race committee will be capricious and arbitrary, and understand that it would be in my best interests to obtain a proper PHRF-NW rating (or, for a multihull, a NWMA rating). I confirm that this information provided is correct, and agree to sail my boat in the described configuration.
