Centre Furnace Mansion, 1001 E. College Ave., State College
Join us as the sun rises on the anniversary of America’s 250th year, for a memorable Independence Day morning that brings history to life through music, reflection, community, and discovery.
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., we invite you to gather for Sunrise & the Spirit of ’76, a special program and reception honoring the ideals, sacrifices, and stories that shaped our nation.
The morning begins outdoors as guests arrive with the sounds of a traditional Fife and Drum Corps presentation featuring musicians in period inspired attire. Following a welcome and a flag ceremony led by Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, guests will enjoy patriotic music reminiscent of the Revolutionary era.
Inside, Girl Scouts will present a reading from the Introduction to the Declaration of Independence before local historian and CCHS President Roger Williams shares a brief talk: Centre County's Ties to the American Revolution revealing how our county is woven into the larger American story.
The celebration concludes with a reception and the exhibition When Past Is Prologue, featuring Revolutionary War-era artifacts from the collection of Richard Pencek. Guests will have the opportunity to speak with Mr. Pencek and archives coordinator Katy Stager about the objects on display, enjoy refreshments, and tour the Mansion with knowledgeable docents.
As our nation marks its Semiquincentennial, there is no better way to begin Independence Day than by reflecting on the courage, vision, and enduring spirit of 1776.
Special thanks to musicians Cathy Herrera, Kyle Haust, and Penn State student Julian Nowlin. And to Charlene Gross, director of the Penn State Fashion Archive for coordinating and providing period dress for the musicians.
