Another visit to view the latest revelations in ice age geology and look for interesting specimens amongst the pebble beds.
The chalky till (boulder clay), deposited by an ice sheet, contains derived fossils and erratics. The underlying Kesgrave Thames river gravels contain Hertfordshire Puddingstone and boulders from as far away as North Wales and S.W. England.
In the floor of the quarry is London Clay which contains occasional fossils. On previous visits, the clays have yielded some interesting examples of Jurassic gryphaea fossils.
Helmet, boots and high visibility jacket are essential. Safety glasses are required if you intend to hammer rocks. This is a working quarry - no under 18s permitted.
