Basic Horseshoe Tournament Rules
Court Setup
Stakes are placed 40 feet apart for standard adult play.
Teams
Doubles/Teams = 2 vs 2
Each player throws 2 horseshoes per inning.
Players alternate throws.
After everyone throws, points are counted.
Players then walk to the opposite stake and continue.
Scoring
Points
Ringer (shoe fully around the stake) = 3 points
Closest shoe within 6 inches = 1 point
Two closest shoes = 2 points
Cancellation Scoring (Most Common)
Only one team scores each round.
Example:
Team A throws 1 ringer
Team B throws 1 ringer
➡ They cancel each other out. No points.
If Team A has:
1 ringer = 3
closest shoe = 1
➡ Total = 4 points
Fouls
A throw is a foul if:
The player steps on or over the foul line
The shoe hits outside objects before landing
A player interferes with scoring before agreement
Foul shoes = 0 points.
