Corona de Nopal is centered on Latino experiences, cultures, histories, and identities. This call is open to all Latino artists and those who respectfully admire the culture. We especially encourage artists to submit work that proudly explores culture in all its forms. The good, the bad, the ugly, and the mundane. We are looking to showcase a wide range of mediums, styles, and creative interpretations, including 2D work, sculpture, ceramics, fiber arts, digital media, and especially installation-based work.
We want to see artwork that reflects lived experiences, traditions, family histories, community, resilience, and the everyday moments that shape who we are. The Sunday morning feeling of having huevito con jamón with your siblings. Taking cold showers in Mexico because the boiler stopped working. The pride and pressure of being the first in your family to graduate from college. The weight of knowing there is violence at home and not knowing how to navigate it. The responsibility of being the eldest daughter in a traditional Latino household. Watching your parents grow older without ever truly being able to rest.
These are only examples. The keyword is some.
Our goal is first and foremost to showcase talented artists. Secondly, we want to create space for work that is rarely seen or discussed. Work that captures the nuances, contradictions, memories, joys, struggles, and realities of Latino life. We are open to all themes, perspectives, and artistic approaches. Art does not always need to carry a direct message, and that is okay. Sometimes your role as an artist is not to tell people what to feel, but simply to create from what you feel and allow the work to take on a life of its own.
