Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop:
Dates: September 25-26, 2025 | Bonus Day September 27th
Times: 9:00am - 4:00pm
Location: In the Umpqua Valley of Oregon; Specific sites to be determined
$200 non-members | $180 members
Join German-born plein air artist Ulrich Gleiter on location for three days of plein air painting and techniques!
We are honored and excited to have Ulrich Gleiter come to Roseburg and share his knowledge and approach to plein air in this three-day workshop. During the workshop, students will paint en plein air in the stunning natural landscapes of the Umpqua. Gleiter will guide students in observing the broader relationships within the scene and translating them onto canvas. Participants will learn color harmony, depict light and shadow, understand proportions, and capture the unique essence of their subjects.
This workshop is a great opportunity after our Umpqua Plein Air event for artists to learn new techniques for their own plein air practice by going overthe fundamentals of this centuries-old painting technique. Artists of all levels of experience with oil painting and/or acrylic painting are welcome to register!
Open to ages 16+
The class will have a morning session and an afternoon session, with a 1-hour break in between. Since the weather in September can be uncertain, we are also reserving an optional third day of painting out on Sunday, September 27th to ensure all students are able to finish their pieces and get the most of this workshop experience.
Students will need to provide their own materials. Below is a list of supplies:
- Oil or Acrylic Paint with the following colors will be good to have:
- Titanium White
- Cadmium Yellow Light / Lemon
- Cadmium Orange
- Cadmium Red
- Raw Ochre or Raw Sienna
- English Red
- Raw Umber
- Chromeoxide Green
- Sky Blue
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cobalt Violet
- Ivory Black
((This is a recommended list of colors provided by Ulrich. Please note that it is not expected for students to have the exact same range of colors))
- Brushes of your choice. Natural bristle sizes between 1 and 12 are recommended in all shapes (i.e. filbert, round, flat). A variety of large and small soft synthetic round and flat brushes are also welcome. Ulrich does recommend that in addition to smaller brushes, be sure to have several larger ones size 6-10
- 1-2 Palette Knives
- At least 3 canvases or panels no smaller than 8x10. Each location will only be painted one time, but it's recommended to be fully stocked and prepared.
- Portable easel and palette
- Odorless Mineral Spirits for Oil Painters (metal travel turpentine jar recommended)
- Paper towels
- Sketchbook
- Prepare a way to move and store wet paintings if using oil paint. If you are painting on panels, here is the brand of a wet painting carrier which Ulrich recommends: Click here to see the Raymar Carriers
Please note: these carriers are for panels/boards, not stretched canvas.
Artists will need to prepare their own water, and lunch/snacks to stay hydrated and fueled for each day. We also advise all participating artists to come prepared for any kind of weather. September is typically cooler here in Roseburg, and while we will be identifying locations with proper tree coverage to mitigate light sprinkles/showers, we advise everyone to prepare with proper clothing/coverage for rain.
