• ERMS Field Visit to Grimes Graves and Mildenhall Museum. Saturday, 18th July 2026

ERMS Field Visit to Grimes Graves and Mildenhall Museum. Saturday, 18th July 2026

  • Grime's Graves is a collection of over 430 shafts and pits. In 1870 they were identified as flint mines dug around 2650 BC, during the later Neolithic period.

There is a visitor centre where a small exhibition can be viewed. We will be taken to inspect one of the pits. Access to the pit is via steps. Members will see how the pits operated through a film down there. We will be able to stand in the pit, and will be provided with hard hats. Find out more about Grimes Graves by clicking on the link:  Grime's Graves - Prehistoric Flint Mine | English Heritage

The visitor centre does not provide much in the way of refreshments. There is a vending machine which sells drink. There are park benches to eat at, so bring your own drinks and packed lunches if required. There are basic toilets onsite.
If members wish to look around the site there is a short trail they can follow.

Mildenhall Museum has a collection of flint tools made in the last century. They are mainly local although there is some material from elsewhere. There is also a display about the Mildenhall Treasure although the actual treasure is elsewhere.

We will be travelling to Grimes Graves by coach (we are using Lodge Coaches). Ros and Ian Mercer will be boarding the coach at High Easter and will be responsible for checking on everyone boarding at both pickup points.

    The pick-ups are as follows:

08.00: Coach leaves The Garage, High Easter, Chelmsford CM1 4QR. Cars can park in the Garage grounds free.

09.00: Coach leaves Stanway Community Centre, Villa Rd, Colchester CO3 0RH . Cars can park at the centre free.

The charge for this visit is £20 for members and £25 for non-members.

10.30: Coach arrives at Grimes Graves Grime's Graves - Prehistoric Flint Mine

13.30: Visit to Grimes Graves over. We re-join the coach to travel on to Mildenhall Museum. However, we are a bit limited on time, so we could abandon Mildenhall museum.

14.30: Coach arrives at Mildenhall Museum.

16.00: Coach leaves Mildenhall to travel back to Stanway then on to High Easter.
