Open Call for Ceramics - a pop-up exhibit during the LIC Arts Open:
Leaky Boundaries curated by Eric Lawrence
It doesn’t matter where you begin with ceramics, your ideas, direction, or ambitions. Eventually, there’s the history. Countless cups, bowls, oil lamps, deities, jewelry…houses. At some point maybe you wonder if everything has already been done.
So, this show is about facing up to it. Who’s to say what a bowl is? What does a plate have to do? If we’re just talking containers then the model of a deity holds more than a cup. There are very leaky boundaries.
Perhaps there is an idea, with hope, inspiration with intent.
Find your path. Make it…There’s just one rule, maximum size is 24 x 24 x 24"...or it can be a large floor piece. And, well, one other thing, primary medium ceramic, other stuff of any kind is just fine.
About the curator:
After careering through the world of advertising, film, and television production for too long, I took the stairs down to a ceramic studio, and have now been wandering around the ceramic universe for 30 years as a maker, teacher, and curator.
I'm completely biased I know, but I don't think I have ever run into a ceramic work without at least some point of interest. - Eric Lawrence
