The Soul of the Form

  • Open Call for LIC-A's sixth annual drawing exhibition:

    The Soul of the Form

We invite artists to submit work for The Soul of the Form, an exhibition exploring the inner structure and spirit that emerges through drawing.

When we truly observe a form—whether a body, a landscape, or a vision—the boundary between object and observer begins to dissolve. What surfaces is the drawing’s core: the intertwining lines and structures that give rise to a final work. We call this the soul of the form.

This exhibition seeks work that reveals this process. We are interested in how structure slowly unfolds into image, and how line, gesture, and form carry emotional and conceptual depth.

Examples of this can be seen in Giacometti’s skeletal figures, the layered intimacy of Munch or Kollwitz, the cellular portraits of Chuck Close, the atmospheric narratives of Turner, or the shifting forms in Cecily Brown’s abstractions. Each artist unites structure and expression in a way that invites the viewer into a deeper experience.

We welcome diverse approaches to drawing—in two or three dimensions—that reflect this union of form and feeling.

    Submission Guidelines:

    · Artists may submit up to three works that show the evolution or transition of form within their practice.

    · Open to all interpretations of drawing.

We look forward to seeing how you reveal the soul within the form.

    About the curators:

Joshua Rosenblatt is an artist and curator who lives in Queens, New York. His curatorial projects put a close lens on the notion of community, with a particular focus on voluntary and proximal relationships between people. His most recent curatorial project was in 2025 titled “Double Portrait”; this exhibition focused on the dynamics and relationships between two people/form/objects as distinct from a larger grouping. As an artist, he is currently working on various series of drawings. These series include a consideration of relationships between parents and their adult children, the different ways that babies are held, and landscapes that look at the ordinary yet make the point that nothing is ordinary. He is also currently working as the Director of Exhibition and Collection Production at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Jorge Posada is a Colombian-born American painter, printmaker, and sculptor whose work reflects a lifelong dialogue between his Latin American roots and his artistic home in the United States. As a young artist, he won first prize at the prestigious Salon of Young Art at the Antioquia Art Museum in his hometown of Medellín, Colombia. He later received an award from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bogotá and earned an Honorable Mention at the Expresiones Hispanas Art Tour USA. His work was also featured on Channel 13's documentary The New Immigrants, a testament to his growing national presence. In a notable public commission, Posada executed a 1,500-square-foot mural at the Ritz Theater in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Since the 1980s, Posada has lived and worked in New York, maintaining a studio in the vibrant art community of Long Island City. He serves as a board member of the nonprofit organization LIC Artists, and he is the founder and curator of the annual LIC Drawing Show, a celebrated local event that highlights the power of drawing in contemporary practice. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally, with a strong presence in Europe, the United States, and South America.
