ABOUT 'DE LAB'
Ma’at Works Dance Collective presents DE LAB, a space for creative methodologies inspired and modeled after Black Caribbean life.In this workshop series we will study Carnival and fete movement cultures from the Caribbean. The masquerade is a subversive iconography revealing images of the past and present. We will study temporality, orient around our everyday life, and observe our local ecology as a divisive praxis. ‘Movement masquerades’ are generated and we compose small dances, writings, meditations, and soundings to build characters of futurity. Our investigations are improvisational, multimodal, and collaborative. This is for artists seeking deeper investigatory methods in movement composition and devising. Timeline
For this movement workshop series we are looking for (five) pre-professional/professional artists to join our 2026 cohort. We highly encourage all participants to commit to attending at least one class a month (minimum) in order to participate. Workshops will be held on Thursdays : May 7 & 21, Jun 4 & 25, and Jul 2 & 23 from 6 PM - 8 PM at The Whole Shebang [1813 S 11 st. Philadelphia, PA 19148].
