In 1876, America gathered in Philadelphia to celebrate the country's centennial at a grand fair. Though not technically the first World's Fair (or even the first in the USA), it nonetheless paved the way for such grand pageants as the 1893 "White City" Fair in Chicago and New York's 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs. Join us for an illustrated lecture focusing on the history of fairs in America, from the earliest celebrations after the American Revolution to the transformation of the "Valley of Ashes" in Corona, Queens, into one of the most important fair venues in the world.
