New York is the city of "millions of beating hearts, lights and shadows, tears and laughter, work and play, night and day." At least that's how the 1939 film "New York: The Wonder City" described it. Filmed ten years into the Depression, with the world on the cusp of World War II, this newsreel is fascinating artifact -- not just a travelogue, but an insight into the way the city (and America) portrayed itself to the world. In this presentation, we'll begin by watching the 10-minute newsreel together and then we'll use the stops on the film's tour to go behind the scenes and examine what the city was truly like at the time.
