There is more disagreement about Israel than ever before – about its legitimacy, its significance, its prospects and its potential. On this Israeli Independence Day, we will consider some ways in which Israel can be imagined and argued over in our day.
Drawing on ideas from his recent work Living the Letters, Rabbi Michael Marmur will suggest some approaches to Israel offering something beyond the apologetic and the apocalyptic.

Rabbi Michael Marmur is Professor of Jewish Theology at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem. He has served as Chair of Rabbis for Human Rights and is currently on their Board. In the past he was Dean of the Jerusalem School of HUC, and then Provost of the College.
His most recent work is Living the Letters: An Alphabet of Emerging Jewish Thought, published in 2025 by Palgrave Macmillan.
