Why do bad things happen to good people? This class examines one of the most enduring questions of faith through close reading of biblical texts, Rabbinic insight, and modern theological reflection.

We will explore how Jewish and thinkers have understood suffering, divine goodness, and human responsibility, and consider newer approaches that reimagine how God relates to a changing world. The goal is not easy answers, but deeper understanding and meaningful questions.

Taught by:

Rabbi Jeffrey Kurtz-Lendner is the rabbi of Beth El Congregation in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and a volunteer chaplain with the Harrisonburg Police Department. He has served congregations and Jewish organizations across the United States, including leadership roles in Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and New Orleans, where he helped guide a community through recovery after Hurricane Katrina.

Rabbi Kurtz-Lendner is active in national rabbinic and communal organizations, has served in numerous educational and chaplaincy roles, and has been recognized for his work in interfaith and civic life. He is a graduate of Brandeis University and was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
