Layered Lino-Cut: Exploring Depth, Color & Process
Ages 16+
Come explore the expressive possibilities of multi-layer linoleum cut printmaking in this hands-on workshop designed for adults and older teens. Participants will create a five-layer soft linoleum relief print, building rich color, texture, and visual depth through successive carving and printing. By layering imagery and color, prints will create an illusion of space and dimensionality, revealing how depth can emerge through both addition and removal.
This workshop encourages play, experimentation, and creative risk-taking. Participants are invited to work intuitively while learning technical strategies for multi-layer printing, registration, and color planning. Mixed media elements may be incorporated into finished prints, expanding the boundaries of traditional printmaking and allowing for personal expression.
The process emphasizes curiosity over perfection. Each cut becomes an opportunity to respond, adjust, and discover—making space for surprise, improvisation, and growth. No prior printmaking experience is required; beginners and experienced artists alike are welcome.
About the Instructor:
Naomi RaMona Schliesman is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose artistic practice is rooted in layering, repetition, and the physical act of making or building things over time process. Through the lino-cut process, she carves, prints, and reworks imagery in multiple stages, allowing each cut to function as both an intentional mark and an act of surrender. The repetition of cutting, removing, and layering mirrors cycles of memory, labor, and lived experience—where clarity gradually emerges.
In her work, depth is created not only through material layers, but through absence and negative space. What is removed becomes as important as what remains. These spaces invite uncertainty and reflection, holding tension between control and intuition, precision and vulnerability. Her imagery reflects the ways we navigate change, grief, faith, resilience, and transformation, themes she thoughtfully weaves into her teaching practice.
