Building a Legacy of Service: John and Matt Anderson
The foundation of the Anderson legacy began in Northern Minnesota, where John Anderson developed a passion for the outdoors that led him to Scouting and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. After moving to Greeley in 1968 to attend UNC, John married his wife, Leanna, and launched his first construction venture in 1974. Over the decades, John built more than just structures; he built community, serving as the Greeley Stampede Grounds Chairman and helping launch the inaugural Arts Picnic. Following Leanna’s passing in 1998, her own spirit of service was memorialized through the Greeley Area Chamber of Commerce’s Community Care Award, a testament to the family’s commitment to Weld County.
Continuing this blueprint of leadership, John’s son, Matt, also earned the rank of Eagle Scout before earning his degree in Engineering and Construction Management from Kansas State University. Matt returned to Greeley in 2003 to join his father's general contracting and property management firm, Ancon Construction. Matt transitioned the company to Ancon II Constructors in 2010, allowing John to retire and spend more time at the family home in Minnesota. Matt's professional success in commercial and multi-family development has been mirrored by an extensive commitment to civic duty. Matt has dedicated his time to the United Way of Weld County, the Greeley Downtown Development Authority, and the Weld Community Foundation, embodying the Scout Law through his tireless work for the region.
Today, the Anderson legacy of service remains a cornerstone of the Greeley community. Matt and his wife, Tonya, are raising the next generation of Andersons in Greeley. Both men have served the Adventure West Council in various capacities over the years, proving that the lessons learned in Scouting—integrity, hard work, and helping others—are the best materials for building a lasting life of impact.
The Adventure West Council, Scouting America, is proud to recognize John & Matt as the Weld County "Sonny Mapelli" Distinguished Citizen for their many outstanding community accomplishments.
The Weld County "Sonny Mapelli" Distinguished Citizen Dinner benefits the local Adventure West Council serving youth in the communities of Weld County.
