    We offer 10-week courses (25 contact hours); 6-week courses (15 contact hours), and 3-week courses (15 contact hours).

    Community education encourages students of all backgrounds and skill levels to create art with guidance from the most talented instructors. All courses and programs are hosted at the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine campus! For adults and teens age 16+, we offer many multi-generational Community Courses year-round that include instruction in drawing, painting, photography, and many other art forms.

                                  SPRING (10-WEEK COURSE) | Drawing from LifeTuesdays, March 3 - 5, 6-8:30 PM: This course teaches students the tradition of drawing from observation. Working from still life, landscape, and live models, participants study proportion, form, and movement while confidently developing their drawing techniques. Through a series of exercises and longer projects, students build both technical skill and a personal sense of expression. Class discussions encourage an understanding of how observation shapes creativity. Beginners and experienced artists alike will find new ways to see and interpret the world through drawing.

                                  SPRING (10-WEEK COURSE) | Fashion ConstructionWednesdays, March 4 - May 6, 6-8:30 PM: Learn how to build garments from the ground up. Students will study pattern cutting, hand and machine sewing, and the fundamentals of fit and structure. This course introduces a range of textiles and explores how materials influence design. Each participant will create one or more finished pieces while developing an understanding of contemporary fashion practice. This course encourages creative problem solving and thoughtful craftsmanship for anyone interested in fashion and design.

                                  SPRING (10-WEEK COURSE) | Contemporary Painting PracticesThursdays, March 5 – May 7, 6-8:30 PM: This course explores painting as a living language. Students will experiment with composition, color, and gesture while studying artists who have reshaped the field of painting. Weekly prompts and open studio sessions encourage discovery and experimentation with different materials and surfaces. Through group conversations and critique, participants learn to connect visual choices to meaning. The course is open to painters at any level who want to expand their ideas and develop a personal approach to painting.

                                  SPRING (6-WEEK COURSE) | Film PhotographyTuesdays, March 31 - May 5, 6-8:30 PM: Experience the process of film photography from start to finish in this course. Students learn to shoot, process, and print their own black and white film while gaining a deep understanding of light and exposure. This course combines technical instruction with an artistic exploration of image-making. Participants spend time both behind the camera and in the darkroom, where they learn to create expressive prints. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in slowing down and rediscovering the tactile nature of the photographic image.

                                  SPRING (6-WEEK COURSE) | Woodshop SkillsWednesdays, April 1 – May 6, 6-8:30 PM: This course is an introduction to the tools and techniques of woodworking. Students will learn how to safely and confidently use hand and power tools while creating small functional or sculptural projects. The instructor will teach joinery, measuring, cutting, and finishing, along with a focus on material understanding and design. Each participant works through their own project while learning from demonstrations and discussions about the relationship between craft and form. No prior woodworking experience is required.

                                  SUMMER (3-WEEK COURSE) | Digital Drawing and DesignTuesdays and Thursdays, July 7 – 23, 6-8:30 PM: This course introduces students to the tools and techniques of digital drawing and design using professional software. Students will learn how to create digital illustrations, develop layouts, and combine text and image for creative projects. This class practices with drawing tablets while utilizing digital brushes, layering, and color management. Students will also explore various approaches to composition and visual storytelling. Each week builds technical skills while encouraging individual style and experimentation. Students will work on a series of digital works suitable for print or web and gain a strong foundation for personal or professional creative practice.

                                  FALL (10-WEEK COURSE) | Figure Drawing and MotionTuesdays, September 15 – November 17, 6-8:30 PM: This course focuses on the study of the human figure through observation and gesture. Students work from live models and explore the relationship between anatomy, proportion, and movement. Sessions include short and extended poses, with attention to line, weight, and rhythm. The class emphasizes how motion informs structure and how drawing can express balance and form.

Students experiment with pigment, texture, and surface preparation while testing traditional and contemporary supports. The course examines how material decisions influence image and concept. Through guided projects and independent study, participants gain technical control and a deeper understanding of how process affects visual form.

                                  FALL (10-WEEK COURSE) | Textile Mending and Embroidery Thursdays, September 17th – November 19, 6-8:30 PM: This course studies textiles through repair, pattern, and embellishment. Students learn hand-stitching, visible mending, and embroidery techniques while examining global traditions of textile processes. This class combines practical skill-building with creative interpretation, encouraging each participant to use thread as a form of drawing. Finished works may include both functional garments and large textile art works.

Students explore image-making through found photographs, printed matter, and personal archives. The course introduces collage to examine memory, history, and visual storytelling. Participants combine analog and digital methods to construct layered compositions that speak to both material and meaning. Class discussions consider artists who use collage as a contemporary practice.

                                  II. I hereby authorize the staff of the Art Academy of Cincinnati to provide routine healthcare if applicable (examples: bandaid and icepack application) and/or to take actions they feel necessary in the case of an emergency involving myself, including but not limited to obtaining professional medical assistance/ treatment.

                                  III. I hereby agree to stay home/outside of the AAC if I am exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, strep throat, influenza, chickenpox, the common cold, and all other infectious diseases. I also agree to arrange to promptly leave programming if I display any symptoms of a potential contagious illness during the course/program session or EXPRESS to an Art Academy staff member that I am experiencing potentially contagious symptoms.

                                  IIV. I herby agree to the terms of the Welcome Packet, including the Student Code of Conduct regarding my behavior during and participation in Art Academy programming, which was included on the website (and should be reviewed below).

                                • V. I hereby understand and agree to terms outlined in the Participation Waiver below.

                                • PARTICIPATION WAIVER

                                  The undersigned person (“Participant”) executes this waiver (“Agreement”) and all heirs, executors, estates, and trustees thereof. This Agreement applies to Participant’s participation in all activities, programs, and events (collectively, “Activities”) sponsored, hosted, or otherwise provided by or on behalf of ART ACADEMY OF CINCINNATI, an Ohio nonprofit corporation (including its directors, officers, members, agents, and employees, collectively, the “AAC”), including, without limitation, Teen Academy, Community Courses, and Portfolio Preparation. 

                                  Participant consents to participation in the Activities. To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:

                                  Participant assumes all risks associated with the Activities. As with any activity, the Activities may present a risk of property damage, serious bodily injury, and/or death. 

                                  Participant hereby waives and releases the AAC from all claims, demands, damages, and causes of action of any nature which either has or may have in connection with the Activities.

                                  Without limiting the foregoing, the AAC shall not be liable to Participant for: (a) any indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, special, or speculative damages in connection with the Activities, regardless of whether the AAC has been advised of the possibility thereof; and (b) any liability to Participant in excess of $500, regardless of the cause of action.

                                  The Activities does not impose any obligation on the AAC to provide transportation. Participant is solely responsible for arranging transportation. Without limiting the foregoing waivers, AAC is not liable for any, and Participant hereby waives all claims related to, any and all property damage, bodily injury, and death incurred by Participant in relation to the transportation to or from the Activities, lack or delay of transportation, or injuries caused by third parties during such transportation.

                                  Participant will leave premises promptly after the Activities. At all times during the Activities, Participant must be available at the phone number set forth below. This is the number that AAC will use to contact Participant for all matters, including emergencies. AAC shall be entitled to release Participant with any individual Particpant chooses to leave with and AAC shall have no liability for doing so nor any obligation to verify the identity or relationship of the same.

                                  Participant shall comply with all rules and regulations of the AAC, as may be modified by the AAC at any time, as well as all directions of AAC employees and representatives at all times. Participant’s failure to so comply may result in termination of Participant’s Activities and Participant agrees to promptly leave the AAC in such case.

                                  In the event of an emergency, as determined by AAC, you authorize AAC to dial 911 and perform any actions or procedures any AAC representative believes in good faith to be necessary or advisable for the best interests of the Participant’s health. Participant releases AAC from any claims related to such actions. The foregoing authorization shall not obligate AAC or any representative thereof to take any such actions.

                                  This Agreement and all claims related to this Agreement and the Activities shall be governed by Ohio law and subject to the exclusive jurisdiction and venue of the courts of Hamilton County, Ohio; provided, however, Participant hereby agrees to first submit all disputes related to this Agreement and/or the Activities to non-binding mediation administered by the Cincinnati Bar Association, with such mediation to be held in Cincinnati, Ohio. The cost of such mediation shall be shared equally by Participant and AAC, and each party shall pay its own attorney fees in connection therewith. In the event of any subsequent court action, Participant shall pay all of AAC’s court costs and reasonable attorney fees in connection with any such dispute. Participant hereby irrevocably waives the right to a trial by jury in any such dispute. If any provision of this Agreement is held by a court of competent jurisdiction to be unenforceable, the remainder of this Agreement shall remain in full force and effect and such unenforceable provision shall be interpreted to the maximum legal extent to reduce AAC’s liability.

                                  Representative and Participant shall comply with all rules and regulations of the AAC, as may be modified by the AAC at any time, as well as all directions of AAC employees and representatives at all times. Participant’s failure to so comply may result in termination of Participant’s Activities and Representative agrees to promptly pick up the Participant in such case.
