WRITING WITH MULES

About the Workshop:
In this single-session, three-hour experiential workshop, we will write, pack, and pay attention. Through learning basic mule packing, we explore how handling objects—rope, saddles, cinches, tools—can sharpen our observational and descriptive writing. We’ll consider how embodied, material knowledge changes our relationship to artifacts and opens new ways of telling stories.
All materials and supplies are included.
Day & Time: Sunday, Jan. 11th from 1-4pm
Place: Rattlesnake Area - Missoula, MT

Audience: This workshop is suitable for individuals all ages. If under the age of 16+ please come with an adult.
What to bring: Warm clothing and sturdy close-toed shoes
Cost: The workshop is free, but a suggested donation is appreciated!
Registration: Registration is required and will close 24 hours before the workshop begins.

About the Artist:
Eva-Maria Maggi is a narrative nonfiction writer, Ph.D. political scientist, and mule packer who has taught at universities in the U.S. and Europe for 15 years. Her work explores how landscape, history, and embodied experience shape story. Her narrative writing has appeared in the book Hush of the Land with Smoke Elser (Bison Books), in Big Sky Journal, Montana Magazine for Western History, and in her newsletter, Between the Lines. She teaches writing through practical skill, attention, and close observation of the natural and material world.
