Los Angeles Youth Classical Competition for Piano and Strings (presented by Fried Music)
Fried Music presents its second annual music competition on January 9th and 10th, 2027 at the Fried Music Concert Hall in downtown Alhambra.
Early Bird Application Deadline: Tuesday, December 1st, 2026
Final Application Deadline: Tuesday, December 15th, 2026.
The Los Angeles Youth Classical Competition celebrates the talent, dedication, and ambition of emerging young classical musicians. Open to string players and pianists across multiple age categories, the competition provides a plaform for students to share their artistry, challenge themselves, and be recognized for their musical achievements and potential.
Monetary awards are presented to outstanding performers in each category in recognition of their artistry, preparation, and promise. Additional prizes may also be conferred at the discretion of the jury to recognize exceptional performances and achievements.
Fried Music Division (January 9th, 2027): For all young musicians currently enrolled in Fried Music private lessons and/or the Pre-College Program.
Open Division (January 10th, 2027): For all young musicians not enrolled in any lessons and/or programs at Fried Music.
String Division (Violin, Viola, Cello):
Junior Category: Ages 13 years old and under
Senior Category: Ages 14 to 18 years old
Piano Division:
Junior Category: Ages 13 years old and under
Senior Category: Ages 14 to 18 years old
Application Requirements:
- For classical pianists, violinists, violists, and cellists
- Students must be available to compete in-person in Alhambra on the day of the competition either on January 9th or 10th, 2027, depending on the division they are participating in.
- Completed application is required. The application fee is non-refundable.
Competition Repertoire Requirements:
Participants are encouraged to select works that best demonstrate their musicality, technical command, and overall artistry while abiding by the following guidelines:
- Strings:
- A solo work OR
- One of more movements of a sonata or concert piece, written for the instrument with piano (Note: String players must provide their own pianist)
- Piano:
- A solo piano repertoire (No second piano or orchestral reduction)
- Maximum time limit:
- Junior Category: 8 minutes
- Senior Categroy: 10 minutes
- If your piece of choice is significantly shorter than the maximum time limit, a second piece may be performed. If the repertoire exceeds the maximum, the jury reserves the right to stop the performance at the time limit without penalty.
- At least one clean, unmarked copy of the music is requested for the judges.
