Perfectly good denim deserves a second life!!!

Take a pair of old skinny jeans and turn them into something completely different—a fun, flirty ruffle mini skirt you'll actually want to wear.

In this hands-on upcycling class, we'll deconstruct the legs of a pair of skinny jeans and transform that forgotten denim into a one-of-a-kind skirt. You'll learn how to work with existing seams, reshape denim, create ruffles, and turn something destined for the donation pile into a brand-new wardrobe piece.

MATERIAL IS NOT PROVIDED

ALSO TO BRING: 1 pair of denim jeans, try to refrain from heavily destressed denim.

Open to all ages and skill levels, this practical workshop will teach you how to properly alter your own clothes so they fit perfectly every time.

Skills You'll Learn:

Measuring & Marking: 

How to accurately pin and mark pants, skirts, or sleeves for the perfect length.

Machine Hemming: 

Quick and durable machine-stitching techniques for everyday wear, jeans, and casual fabrics.

Fabric Prep: 

Working with different material weights and pressing your hems for a crisp, professional look.

Whether you are an absolute beginner or just want to stop paying for alterations, Doug will walk you through everything step-by-step. Bring your own machine or rent one of ours!

We provide scrap fabrics to practice different hemming methods and would encourage you to bring in something from your wardrobe you would like hemmed! Don't have any clothing item you would like to hem? Don't Fret! We have PLENTY of practice materials and clothing items. 

Have a sewing machine sitting at home that you've been meaning to learn? Haven't had the chance to try to sew yet but have been sew curious? Don't fret! We have rental machines available!

Learn simple maintenance that can help keep your machine running smoothly, including where and when to use sewing machine lubricant and how to keep your machine clean.

⚙️ Getting to Know Your Machine

We'll identify the important parts of your machine and explain what those mysterious knobs, levers and settings actually do.

🎛️ Tension & Stitch Settings

Learn how to recognize incorrect tension, adjust it properly, and understand how different fabrics and threads can require different settings.

TAKE HOME THE KNOW-HOW

You won't just leave with a few stitches under your belt! Each student receives a Tension & Stitch Guide plus a step-by-step machine threading and maintenance diagram to keep beside your machine at home.

Learn to make your own long-sleeve stretch bolero-style top in this hands-on sewing class held inside OUR WORKSHOP at Vintage Exchange. Taylor takes you through the process from pattern to finished garment, learning how to work with stretchy fabrics while creating a versatile piece you can wear over dresses, tanks, OR ANYTHING!

We recommend upcycling a maxi dress or yoga pants for second hand stretch material--- but if you must buy new- look for 4 way stretch material!
