Session 8: Irony
This Saturday, February 21, we will go over various forms of irony and explore the concept through the figures of Socrates, Aristotle (and his theory of the great man), Kierkegaard, and perhaps even David Foster Wallace. This should give us a more complete picture.
There are many questions to explore here. When we try to be “post-ironic,” are we just adding another layer of irony? Is New Sincerity actually sincere, or is it just ironic about sincerity? Can people even be completely sincere today? What’s the difference between Socratic irony (which pursues truth through apparent ignorance) and contemporary irony (which often seems to dodge any claim to truth at all)? Can you be both ironic and committed? Both detached and engaged?
This session will be on Saturday, February 21st - Time 2pm EST
