Session 9: The Mystery of Mastery
Join us on Friday, March 7th at 2:00 PM for our next Philosophy Cafe as we explore the nature of mastery.
One of the topics that came up during our last discussion was the idea of mastery, the state of being fully immersed in what you’re doing. The modern term for this is “flow,” a term coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. This is something that has interested me for a long time because it is related to Zen Buddhism, genius and other such things.
Consider the master swordsman who no longer thinks about their blade, the pianist whose fingers move without conscious direction, the surgeon who operates in a state of pure absorption. There isn’t even the space of irony in these moments. The master exists in a state of complete absorption with the task at hand. He can’t comment on what he is doing because he is what he is doing.
This session will be on Saturday, March 7th - Time 2pm EST
