On November 4, 1825, New York celebrated the “Wedding of the Waters,” a grand ceremony marking the completion of the Erie Canal and forever changing the nation’s history. Two hundred years later, join historian James Nevius as we revisit this momentous occasion—an engineering marvel that linked the Great Lakes to the Atlantic, transformed New York City into America’s commercial capital, and reshaped the cultural and political landscape of the young republic. This talk will explore the triumphs, tensions, and legacy of the canal at its bicentennial, reminding us why the building of the Erie Canal remains one of the most consequential events in American history. The installation "Erie Canal 200th Anniversary" is currently on view at The New York Historical.
Tickets are $22 ($20 including fees) and include a recording of the talk, which will be emailed to all registrants approximately 24 hours after the presentation. PLEASE NOTE: The Zoom link only works for the live presentation on the day of the event. If you plan to watch the recording, look for a separate email with a link to Vimeo.
