  • Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha's principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

The Albuquerque Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on February 20th, 1971. It is designated the “Iota Psi Lambda” chapter and is composed of college-educated men with a minimum of a four-year bachelor’s degree initiated into the fraternity via a college or alumni chapter locally or abroad. Chapter members are employees of many local businesses and institutions including but not limited to; APS, Sandia National Laboratories, U.S. Forest Service and the University of New Mexico. The Iota Psi Lambda Alumni Chapter frequently partners with various organizations in the community for the carrying out of a variety of service projects and community service including our annual awarding of scholarships to deserving high school graduates in the Albuquerque Community.

  • Educational Initiatives

One component of Iota Psi Lambda’s educational efforts is the implementation of two of the fraternity’s national programs. These two, youth education focused programs are called “Go-To-High School, Go-To-College” and “Project Alpha”. Iota Psi Lambda works to implement both youth education programs via a series of lunch-time workshops and the execution of the Alpha Mentorship Program within the Albuquerque Public School System at our partner institutions.

    Go-To-High School, Go-To-College Project Alpha

The "Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College" program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young men and women, given that school completion is one of the single best predictors of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men and women receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Additionally, Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models from their own communities to emulate who are acquiring and have acquired bachelors and advanced degrees.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the March of Dimes began collaboratively implementing Project Alpha in 1980. This collaborative project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for youth ages 12-15 years old. Primarily designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers focused on improving life-outcomes of young people primarily by sharing knowledge and combating ignorance and fear with factual information, and creating a sense of empowerment, self-esteem, and self-control over one’s person and his/her decisions.

  • Alpha Mentorship Program (AMP)

In June of 2016, as part of the “Go-To-High School-Go-To-College” initiative, the Iota Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc established the Alpha Mentorship Program (AMP). This program is designed to address the academic, social, and cultural needs of young minority high school students. Members of the Fraternity serve as mentors. Students in AMP are mentored throughout their freshmen and sophomore years of high school in the areas of academic excellence, community awareness, and cultural activism. We provide academic assistance, and overall exposure to key areas that can impact and shape their lives in highly transformative manner. In subsequent high school years (Junior and Senior) the students will continue to participate in the program as student mentors and role models for the future incoming Freshmen in the program as a way of building and enhancing their leadership skills.

  • E. S. Foster Education Assistance Trust Scholarship Awards
