Overview
Rosie, the sassiest kid on her block of Brooklyn’s Avenue P, entertains herself and her friends by acting out showbiz fantasies, notably directing and starring in an Oscar-winning movie.
Written by the author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are and other popular children’s books, Really Rosie is a jewel for children and adults. Author Maurice Sendak is the winner of a Caldecott Medal, National Book Award, and a National Medal of the Arts. Legendary composer Carole King is the winner of a National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement Award, a Grammy Trustees Award and the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Award for Popular Song, and has been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Important Parent Information
Information Class: Tuesday, August 11th, 3:30-5:30pm. This is a free class where we will prepare for auditions and have some fun playing games! Audition forms and important parent information will be sent home.
Parent Information Meeting: Tuesday, August 11th, 5:30pm-5:45pm. Pick up your kids and learn more about what being in Cedar Theater is all about!
Auditions: Tuesday, August 18th. Students will be singing the song we learned on August 14th, or will bring their own song from home. A karaoke track must be provided if not singing from the script.
Add/Drop/Tuition Deadline: Monday, August 25th at 11:59pm. All students must be enrolled or removed from enrollment by this date, and tuition must be paid in full before midnight. No refunds are given if you disenroll or are removed for discipline issues after this date.
Performance: Oct. 9th (and possibly the 10th). The performance begins at 7pm, but students will need to be there at 6pm.
Rehearsals: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30pm - 5:30pm. Rehearsals will be at Cedar Hills Heritage Park Ampitheater. Healthy snacks will be provided, assisted by parent volunteers. We encourage parents to be involved as a volunteer to assist with bringing snacks, helping with rehearsals, or both.
Characters
Rosie - Low singing (LEAD) - : The sassiest kid on Avenue P. A self-proclaimed star and director who orchestrates the "movie" and directs her friends in song and dance.
Chicken Soup - Rosie’s dopey, younger brother. He acts as one of Rosie's most loyal followers, but often gets caught up in his own silly routines.
Kathy - A dramatic, storytelling friend. She serves as one of Rosie's main confidantes (and occasional rivals) in the neighborhood.
Pierre - A friend whose primary defining characteristic is his stubbornness (he ultimately learns the lesson that he does "care").
Johnny - A stoic neighborhood boy who takes life as it comes, famously featured in the musical for counting all the ways he does things completely on his own.
Alligator - A playful, mischievous friend who often joins in on Rosie's wild showbiz fantasies.
Pierre's Mother: A frantic, exasperated parent who tries desperately to get Pierre to behave, only to receive a flat "I don't care" in response.
Pierre's Father: The stern but helpless father who warns Pierre about his terrible attitude before leaving him alone.
The Lion: A flamboyant, highly dramatic comedic villain who happily eats Pierre, suffers a terrible stomachache, and is forced to cough him back up.
The Doctor: A fast-acting medical professional called in to examine the sick, Pierre-stuffed Lion.
Rosie & Chicken Soup’s Mother: An authoritative figure who disrupts the big movie production by calling the kids inside for dinner or chores.
Johnny’s Mother: A voice that interacts during Johnny's solo moments when he tries to keep his room organized.
Kathy’s Mother: Another parental voice added to fill out the chaotic neighborhood dynamic.
The Nutshell Kids / Neighborhood Ensemble: A versatile chorus of kids who act as Rosie's movie crew and fill out the musical numbers.
