What is Placenta Encapsulation?
Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing a mother’s placenta after the birth of her baby by dehydrating, powdering, and placing it into capsules for the mother to use as she sees fit.

Client Responsibility
- It is your responsibility to notify us after the birth—ideally within 24 hours—to arrange for our encapsulator to process your placenta. Delays in notification may result in spoilage, rendering the placenta unusable for encapsulation.

- You must discuss the release of your placenta from the hospital with them directly (not just your doctor or midwife) and ensure proper labeling and storage of your placenta in a refrigerator or cooler, placed on ice until it can be prepared. Your placenta should not be treated with alcohol or any other preservatives.
Preparing Your Placenta for Transport:
- The placenta can remain at room temperature for 3-4 hours.
- If practicing delayed cord cutting or lotus birth, ice packs may be wrapped with the placenta to prevent spoilage.
- Place your placenta in a large zip-top bag or container (if not already provided by the hospital).
- Store the container in the refrigerator or on ice in a cooler, but do not place the placenta directly on ice.
- You can claim your placenta after cesarean surgery; discuss this with your hospital.
Placenta Preparation Methods:
- RAW: The placenta is dehydrated at a temperature under 160°F, following Pennsylvania Food Handling Safety Guidelines. This method yields a slightly larger capsule and may provide a stronger energy boost. It must be processed within 48 hours.
- STEAMED: The placenta is steamed before dehydration, which can make the capsules easier to digest and preferred for those with anxiety or insomnia. This method can be performed as long as the placenta has been stored properly.
- Tincture: A piece of raw placenta is steeped in 100 proof alcohol for 40 days.
In-Home Encapsulation
Our encapsulation specialist will prepare your capsules in the comfort of your home, ensuring safety and reducing contamination risk. Your partner or family member can bring the placenta home within 24 hours of birth, and we will meet them to begin the process. We supply all necessary equipment and supplies; we just need a workspace. Our specialist will be in your home for 5-7 hours over a two-day period.
Additional Considerations
- For the safety of our placenta specialists, we request confirmation from your care provider that you are free of infectious diseases, along with a self-declaration regarding your health.
- There may be circumstances where your placenta cannot be used due to significant abnormalities or signs of infection during labor.
Failure to Provide Encapsulation Services
We will make every effort to provide the services described here.
- Final payment is expected prior to the last day of preparation. If payment is not received, this may delay or terminate services.
- If you choose to terminate this agreement before preparation begins, your full fee will be refunded. However, there will be no refund once preparation has started, even if you decide not to take delivery of the finished product.
