Friday Night Science presents Fire After Dark, a hands-on introduction to prescribed burning in partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission.

Participants will begin the evening with a short discussion about the role of fire in maintaining healthy ecosystems, particularly in wetlands and grassland habitats. Forestry professionals will explain how prescribed burns are planned, conducted safely, and used as a tool to support biodiversity and habitat management.

After the introduction, participants will move outside to observe and assist with a live wetland burn at WaterWorks. Under professional supervision, attendees will have the opportunity to help put good fire on the ground using tools commonly used in prescribed burning, including drip torches and fire flaps.

No previous experience is required. This is a guided, hands-on evening designed for curious adults who want to better understand how fire is used to care for landscapes across Alabama.

Due to the nature of this activity, participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
