  • CAT FLU INFORMATION

  • "Cat flu" is a common term used to describe upper respiratory infections in cats most commonly caused by feline herpes (FHV-1).

    • FHV-1 is widespread, especially among cats that have lived on the streets, in shelters, in foster care, as well as from breeders.
    • Common signs of cat flu include sneezing, runny or blocked nose, watery or inflamed eyes, eye or nose discharge, coughing, fever, lethargy and reduced appetite.
    • Many cats are exposed as kittens, and once infected, the virus can remain latent in the cat for life, meaning it can flare up during stress or illness.
    • Vaccination helps reduce the severity of illness but does not completely prevent infection.
    • Your Cat may experience flu symptoms in it's lifetime. These usually happen during times of stress, illness, or changes in their environment such as at the time of adoption.
    • 'Cat flu' is zoonotic and could be passed on to resident cats in the home. We strongly recommend your cat is up to date with their vaccinations prior to bringing your rescue cat home.
    • If your rescue cat displays signs of cat flu, early veterinary care, good hygiene, stress reduction, and isolation from other cats in the home while symptomatic are key to recovery and preventing spread.
    • For more information about cat flu click HERE or speak with your veterinarian.
